Student projects explore innovative cellphone uses in developing world

A cellphone is not just for calling, texting and taking pictures anymore. Several startup business ventures spawned by MIT students, sometimes as class projects and sometimes as independent work, are exploring new ways to harness the increasingly ubiquitous devices. They are using phones to help people, especially in developing nations, to raise their incomes, learn to read, get where they're going and even diagnose their ailments.

Congratulations to Moca! Moca is selected from 648 competitors to be one of 12 finalists for the Lien i3 Challenge. Moca team is working hard enhancing the service this summer and preparing for the second stage of the competition on September 3rd and 4th in Singapore.

April 2009 - ICTD Young/Early Researchers Workshop 2009

During the "Young Researchers' Workshop" at ICTD2009 on April 17 in Doha, Qatar, Scot Frank presented a paper on his past work in international development and ICT, including Zaca Mobile, one of his recent involvements over the past year that empowers rural farmers in Mexico through information access. Of course, this project also calls the Next Billion Network its home, and we are both proud and excited to see Scot representing us not only 'in the field' but also on paper amongst colleagues and collaborators!
